International Advanced Level vs IB: Understanding the Difference
At British International Academy Marrakech (BIAM), we understand the importance of helping families make informed decisions about post-16 education.
Two internationally recognised pathways available to students around the world are Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Levels (IAL) and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP).
Both provide pathways to higher education, but they differ significantly in their structure, subject selection and approach to assessment.
At BIAM, our Sixth Form students follow Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Level (IAL) programmes.
Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Levels
Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Levels are subject-based qualifications designed for international learners.
Students normally specialise in a smaller number of subjects, allowing them to develop considerable depth of knowledge in areas aligned with their academic strengths, intended university course and future aspirations.
At BIAM, students normally select three International Advanced Level subjects, with subject choices guided by their academic profile and future university requirements.
Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Levels have a modular structure. Qualifications are divided into individual units, which are assessed during the programme of study.
International AS qualifications may be taken as standalone qualifications or may contribute towards the corresponding International Advanced Level, according to the relevant subject specification.
The full International Advanced Level is graded from A to E*, with A* being the highest passing grade.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a broad academic programme for students aged 16 to 19.
Students completing the full IB Diploma study six subjects across a range of academic disciplines.
The programme also includes three core components:
Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
The Extended Essay (EE)
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
Students normally study three or four subjects at Higher Level (HL), with the remaining subjects studied at Standard Level (SL).
Each IB subject is graded from 7 to 1, with 7 being the highest grade. The full Diploma has a maximum score of 45 points, including up to three additional points from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay.
The award of the full IB Diploma requires students to achieve at least 24 points and to satisfy the programme’s additional requirements.
Key Differences
Subject specialisation
Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Levels allow students to specialise in a smaller number of subjects and study these areas in considerable depth.
The IB Diploma requires students to maintain a broader academic programme across six subjects and several subject groups.
Programme structure
Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Levels are individual subject qualifications. Students select subjects according to their strengths, interests and future university requirements.
The IB Diploma is an integrated programme combining six subjects with the compulsory Diploma Programme core.
Assessment
Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Levels use a modular assessment structure, with individual units assessed throughout the programme.
The IB Diploma uses both internal and external assessment. In most subjects, written examinations at the end of the programme form an important part of the final assessment, alongside internally or externally assessed coursework and other subject-specific components.
Additional programme requirements
International Advanced Level students focus principally on their selected academic subjects.
Students completing the full IB Diploma must also complete Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service.
University Recognition
Both Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Levels and the IB Diploma Programme are recognised by universities internationally.
University admission requirements vary considerably according to the country, institution and degree programme. Students should therefore consider not only the qualification itself but also the subjects and grades required for their intended university course.
At BIAM, subject selection is discussed individually with students and families, taking into account academic strengths, future aspirations and university entry requirements.
